De appellation Bourgogne is een verzamelappellation voor witte en rode wijnen die afkomstig kunnen zijn uit de gehele Bourgogne en voldoen aan enkele voorgeschreven regels met betrekking tot druivenrassen, opbrengsten etc. Kwalitatief kunnen de wijnen enorm variëren van uiterst simpel tot zeer fraai. De beste Bourgognes worden gemaakt door topproducenten die in hun Bourgogne nogal eens druiven afkomstig van hoger gekwalificeerde gronden verwerken en deze wijnen eenzelfde opvoeding geven als hun hoge crus. In het beste geval bieden deze wijnen ongekend veel kwaliteit voor hun prijs. Mijn motto luidt dan ook: “Liever een simpele Bourgogne van een topproducent dan een hoge Cru van een middelmatige producent”.

Denis Bachelet maakt een heel klein beetje Bourgogne Aligoté die opvallend goed van kwaliteit is. Een heerlijk glas voor een uiterst bescheiden prijs. Serveer de wijn bij charcuterie en natuurlijk bij de jambon persillé.

Voortreffelijke witte Bourgogne op het niveau van menig village. Burghound over de 2008 (de 2009 is naar mijn mening zelfs een niveau beter: “A ripe and equally expressive nose of floral and citrus aromas merges into round, nicely rich and beautifully detailed flavors that possess good intensity on the citrus-infused and dry finish that is persistent and well-balanced. Very good quality for its level. Outstanding Top Value!”.

Saint-Véran "Les Pommards", Robert-Dénogent 2008
De akker “Les Pommards”, wordt door velen als de beste akker van de appellation beschouwd. De gemiddeld 50 jaar oude stokken geven een wijn die zich kan meten met een absolute top Pouilly-Fuissé. Burghound: “Here too gentle wood notes are not strong enough to really detract from the slightly riper spiced yellow orchard fruit aromas that complement the succulent and textured yet tight medium-bodied flavors that possess outstanding fruit/acid balance and excellent length. It's rare to find St. Véran of this caliber. Outstanding!”

Bourgogne Aligoté, Arnaud Ente 2009
This very old vine example of Aligoté is my nomination for the finest made in all of Burgundy these days, as I have to give it a slight nod over the beautiful version also produced by Jean-François Coche. The 2009 is a lovely bottle, as it offers up a complex and vibrant nose of lemon, apple, a gentle touch of leesiness and a beautiful base of minerality. On the palate the wine is fullish, complex and snappy, with the generosity of 2009 evident on the attack, but with outstanding backend grip and cut. A really superb bottle of Aligoté. 2010-2025. 89. Michel Bettane: “Tension minérale irrésistance, proche de l’aligoté ideal, fin de bouche raffinée, vraiment étonnante.”

Hautes Côtes de Nuits, Clos Saint-Philibert, Méo-Camuzet 2008
De wijngaard Clos Saint-Philibert ligt hoger in de heuvels binnen de gemeente Flagey op slechts een steenworp afstand van de beroemde Grand Cru Echézeaux. Jean Méo besloot deze akker in 1990 om te planten naar Chardonnay vanwege het relatief koelere klimaat. Een verstandige keuze want inmiddels levert deze een verrukkelijke en bijzonder fraaie witte Bourgogne die doet denken aan een Corton-Charlemagne. Deze wijn van de oogt 2006 smaakt nu al verrukkelijk. Vanzelfsprekend kan hij ook de nodige jaren worden opgelegd. Een absolute aanrader!

Hautes Côtes de Nuits "Clos Saint-Philibert", Méo-Camuzet 2009
John Gilman: "The 2009 Clos St. Philibert blanc was showing quite well at the time of my visit, as it offers up a lovely combination of ripe and pure fruit with a nice base of white soil tones and bright acidity. The nose delivers a very pretty blend of lemon, apple, chalky soil tones and spring flowers. On the palate the wine is medium-full, fresh and vibrant, with fine framing acids and quite good backend length and mid-palate amplitude. A very tasty bottle that will drink well right out of the blocks."

Sarah Marsh: "This is a blend of young vines from Puligny and older vines from Meursault.Straightforward, but hugely attractive on the pristine nose with minerally, citrussy fruit. Actually, on the palate this is surprisingly elegant and poised for this level. The texture is refined and silky and the fruit is understated, but intense. Pretty long and sweetly mineral on the finish. Excellent". Bourgogne. From 2009/10.

Schitterende Bourgogne Blanc op het niveau van een betere village wijn. De druiven zijn afkomstig van jonge aanplant uit Puligny-Montrachet en oudere stokken binnen Meursault. John Gilman: “The 2009 Bourgogne blanc is another superb example of the vintage (this too is about as fine an example as one can find anywhere in Burgundy at this level). The superb bouquet offers up a pure and refined mélange of pears, delicious apples, lemon zest, chalky soil tones, spring flowers and perhaps just a touch of leesiness. On the palate the wine is fullish, pure and wonderfully complex for its appellation, with a fine core of fruit, crisp acids and excellent length and grip on the vibrant finish.
