Domaine Ponsot

Domaine Ponsot, één van de beroemdste producenten van de gehele Bourgogne, werd opgericht in 1732 door William Ponsot. Als één van de eerste producenten zagen de Ponsots het belang in van botteling op domein en al vanaf 1930 is men hier op overgegaan. De huidige eigenaar is de excentrieke Laurent Ponsot. Laurent is een echte wereldburger en in tegenstelling tot veel collega’s die nauwelijks verder dan Beaune of Dijon komen, reist hij de hele wereld over om zijn wijnen te promoten. Ponsot heeft uitgesproken ideeën over hoe je grote wijnen moet maken. Zo is hij een fervent voorstander van de Aligoté-druif. Zijn witte Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Mont-Luisant wordt sinds hij daarvoor toestemming heeft verkregen weer volledig van de Aligoté gemaakt, net als vroeger. Overigens is Ponsot van mening dat deze druif minstens zulke grote wijnen kan voortbrengen als de Chardonnay, mits hij op de goede plekken (lees hellingen) staat aangeplant en de druif zeer streng wordt gesnoeid. Dat het in ieder geval mogelijk is om waarlijk grote wijn van de Aligoté te maken, bewijst zijn Mont-Louisant want deze wijn behoort bij de absolute top van de witte Bourgognes. Ook op het gebied van rode wijnen heeft hij zo zijn eigen gebruiken. Bijna ieder jaar is Ponsot een van de laatste producenten die begint met oogsten, de druiven komen ultra rijp de kelder binnen. Voor de rijping gebruikt Ponsot houten vaten die minimaal 8 jaar oud zijn, sommige zijn zelfs wel 30 jaar oud. Sulfiet wordt zo min mogelijk gebruikt evenals bestrijdingsmiddelen in de wijngaard, maar Ponsot wil zich hierop niet vast pinnen, want de flexibiliteit wil hij behouden. Na een wat onregelmatige periode begin jaren negentig lijkt Ponsot het juiste spoor te hebben gevonden. De laatste jaren worden deze wijnen gerekend bij de absolute top van de Bourgogne en regelmatig scoort zijn Clos de la Roche Cuvée Vieilles Vignes bij de vijf beste rode wijnen van de hele Bourgogne. Doordat er een hevige handel in vervalsingen in deze wijn is ontstaan zal Ponsot in de toekomst zijn flessen voorzien van een unieke strip die dit moet tegen gaan.

Clos de la Roche, Cuvée Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Ponsot 2007 Burghound: "An even more complex nose offers up a mix of both high and medium-toned aromas of mostly red berries but with a panoply of background nuances including leather, tea, underbrush, spice hints, jerky and smoke, most of which transfer to the textured, intense and precise full-bodied flavors that are, somewhat surprisingly, not quite as dense but actually finer (normally it's the reverse), all wrapped in a hugely long and explosive finish that completely coats the palate with extract, indeed so much of it that this does not seem all that structured yet it will clearly need from 12 to 15 years to be at its best. A great Clos de la Roche".

Gevrey-Chambertin, Cuvée de l'Abeille, Domaine Ponsot 2007 Burghound: "from a parcel of vines in Les Epointures, a lieu-dit near Chapelle-Chambertin. This is also relatively elegant and while there is ample Gevrey earth in evidence on the ripe red pinot fruit laced with game and underbrush aromas, the nose still comes across as refined as do the rich, round, supple and attractively detailed medium-bodied flavors where the supporting acidity does a good job of framing the flavors in sharp relief. A quality villages".

Chambolle-Musigny, Cuvée des Cigales, Domaine Ponsot 2007 Burghound: "A very appealing nose features red, blue and violet aromas intermingled with subtle spice and mineral hints that continue onto the rich, full, round and textured middle weight flavors that possess good extract to buffer the moderately firm tannins that confer a dusty mouth feel to the harmonious and persistent finish. This too is a quality villages that should reward 6 to 8 years in the cellar".

Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru, Domaine Ponsot 2007 Burghound: "A moderately complex but quite densely fruited nose of earthy red berries, underbrush and warm earth tones leads to silky, rich and round broad-shouldered flavors that possess taut muscle but no hard edges or tannins, in fact the mouth feel here is quite sophisticated, all wrapped in an impressively intense, mouth coating and harmonious finish. The structure is dense but fine and this should benefit from at least a decade of cellar time. A Griotte of class, grace and distinction. 93 points."
