Arnaud EnteArnaud Ente is zonder twijfel één van de grootste wijnmakers van zijn generatie en zijn wijnen behoren tot de allergrootste witte Bourgognes. Ik schaar ze minstens op een zelfde niveau als Coche-Dury, Comte Lafon en Roulot. Je spreekt hier dus over de absolute wereldtop. Het is onmogelijk om aan te geven wie binnen dit illustere gezelschap de beste is, het is een kwestie van persoonlijke voorkeuren. Arnaud (de oudere broer van Benoit uit Puligny) begon halverwege de jaren negentig voor zichzelf nadat hij eerder werkte voor o.a. Jean-Francois Coche-Dury. De wijngaarden liggen (op een klein perceel na) verspreid binnen de gemeente Meursault. Al binnen enkele jaren werden de wijnen van Arnaud door de internationale wijnpers opgemerkt. Ente maakt naam met rijke, intense wijnen. Zijn recept hiervoor was hard werken in de wijngaard, laat oogsten en relatief veel nieuw hout. Begin 2000 besluit Arnaud zijn stijl radicaal te veranderen. Hij wil meer frisheid en precisie in zijn wijnen. Het werk in de wijngaard wordt met nog meer zorg gedaan. Weinig producenten besteden zoveel aandacht aan hun wijngaard. Het oogstmoment wordt naar voren gehaald (Ente is nu steevast de eerste die zijn druiven binnenhaalt). De laatste jaren volgen steeds meer producenten zijn voorbeeld. Naast Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey behoren sinds een paar jaar ook Lafon en Leflaive tot de vroege oogsters. In de kelder is het percentage nieuw hout teruggeschroefd en maakt Arnaud Ente steeds meer gebruik van 300 en 600 liter vaatjes. De wijnen krijgen een lange rijping en verblijven vervolgens nog een aantal maanden op cuve alvorens ze zonder filtering op fles gaan. Jaar in jaar uit is Ente bezig de kwaliteit van zijn wijnen nog verder omhoog te brengen. Zijn collectie 2009 vormt een voorlopig hoogtepunt en is volgens velen de beste die hij ooit heeft gemaakt. Bijzonder aan de wijnen van Ente is dat ook zijn Aligoté en Bourgogne Blanc met een zelfde aandacht en zorg worden gemaakt als zijn grote crus waardoor deze absoluut “hors categorie” zijn. De wijnen zijn kostbaar, maar dit is volledig gerechtvaardigd gezien de unieke kwaliteit. Een absolute must voor de liefhebber van grote witte Bourgognes!

Bourgogne Aligoté, Arnaud Ente 2009
This very old vine example of Aligoté is my nomination for the finest made in all of Burgundy these days, as I have to give it a slight nod over the beautiful version also produced by Jean-François Coche. The 2009 is a lovely bottle, as it offers up a complex and vibrant nose of lemon, apple, a gentle touch of leesiness and a beautiful base of minerality. On the palate the wine is fullish, complex and snappy, with the generosity of 2009 evident on the attack, but with outstanding backend grip and cut. A really superb bottle of Aligoté. 2010-2025. 89. Bourgogne Grand Ordinaire, Arnaud Ente 2009
John Gilman: “The 2009 Grand Ordinaire, which is comprised entirely of old gamay (1938), would make a fine ringer in a blind tasting of Cru Beaujolais. The nose offers up a ripe and complex blend of roasted cherries, woodsmoke, great soil tones, a touch of gamebird and a gentle nuttiness in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite vibrant, with good mid-palate stuffing, modest tannins and fine length and grip on the finish. Good juice. 2010-2020+. 89.”

Sarah Marsh: "This is a blend of young vines from Puligny and older vines from Meursault.Straightforward, but hugely attractive on the pristine nose with minerally, citrussy fruit. Actually, on the palate this is surprisingly elegant and poised for this level. The texture is refined and silky and the fruit is understated, but intense. Pretty long and sweetly mineral on the finish. Excellent". Bourgogne. From 2009/10.

Schitterende Bourgogne Blanc op het niveau van een betere village wijn. De druiven zijn afkomstig van jonge aanplant uit Puligny-Montrachet en oudere stokken binnen Meursault. John Gilman: “The 2009 Bourgogne blanc is another superb example of the vintage (this too is about as fine an example as one can find anywhere in Burgundy at this level). The superb bouquet offers up a pure and refined mélange of pears, delicious apples, lemon zest, chalky soil tones, spring flowers and perhaps just a touch of leesiness. On the palate the wine is fullish, pure and wonderfully complex for its appellation, with a fine core of fruit, crisp acids and excellent length and grip on the vibrant finish. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish and very racy, with fine mid-palate depth, lovely focus and superb length and grip on the classy finish. John Gilman: “The 2009 Clos des Ambres is one of the few 2009s that I tasted on this trip which showed off the same crystalline profile that was evident in so many top white wines in the 2008 vintage. The very complex bouquet is excellent, as it offers up scents of apple, lemon, orange, great minerality, a touch of iodine, hints of the nuttiness to come, vanillin oak and a topnote of apple blossoms. Volnay 1er Cru Santenots du Millieu, Arnaud Ente 2009
John Gilman: “The 2009 Ente Santenots is a beautifully elegant rendition of the vintage. The”nose is deep, refined and pure, as it delivers scents of red and black cherries, woodsmoke,gamebird, fresh herb tones, lovely minerality and just a touch of oak. (There were a few vintages back in the early years of this decade where I thought this wine was raised in too much new wood, as Monsieur Ente was experimenting with a very low sulfur regimen for the Santenots and needed as clean a vessel as possible for the elevage, but happily those days are now in the past and this wine is really starting to come into its own.) On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, nicely structured and beautifully balanced, with a sappy core of pure fruit, fine acids and just a bit of backend tannin to resolve before this wine starts its period of primetime drinking. A beautiful bottle of Volnay. 2016-2040. 91+.”

David Schildknecht: "There are five barrels this year of Ente’s 2007 Meursault Le Seve du Clos from ancient vines in the Ormeau, as compared with just three in 2006. Musky, narcissus-like florality and ocean breeze salinity and alkalinity in the nose are joined by lemon, yellow plum, white peach, and high-toned herbal essences on a persistently invigorating and mouth-wateringly saline palate, virtually fat-free – though boasting a slick of glycerin – and athletic in its leanness and energy. The mineral matter here seems to stick to my teeth, not to mention my gums, along with toasty and faintly bitter notes of nuts and peach kernel. Ethereal floral and herbal distillates and an almost electric tingling of citrus add allure to the wine's formidable, penetrating finish. "
