Niellon
NiellonMichel Niellon (achter in de zeventig) wordt de laatste jaren bijgestaan door zijn schoonzoon, maar is nog altijd zeer actief. Na vele decennia vanuit de gezellige, maar veel te kleine (en naar mijn mening te warme) kelder achter het woonhuis te hebben gewerkt, werd onlangs een volledig nieuwe cuverie aan de ander kant van de route nationale in gebruik genomen. Hoewel Niellon beroemd is en zijn wijnen een sterstatus genieten, blijft hij een uiterst bescheiden man. Het liefst is hij bezig in zijn wijngaarden waar hij zijn oude stokken met alle liefde en aandacht verzorgt. Doordat Niellon slechts een paar hectare wijngaard bezit, is dit ook mogelijk. Als je hem naar zijn wijnmaak-filosofie vraagt, haalt hij zijn schouders op en zegt geen geheimen te hebben. Toch bezit Niellon iets magisch/geniaals wat hem onderscheidt van de rest en wat je slechts zeer zelden tegenkomt. Zijn wijnen bezitten een ongekende rijpheid en dikte en koppelen dit aan een verleidelijk fruit en een fraaie complexiteit. Zijn wijnen behoren tot de beste van Chassagne-Montrachet en tot de top op het gebied van witte Bourgognes. Robert Parker: “How good is Niellon? An extraordinary winemaker he is, in my opinion, the finest in Chassagne-Montrachet and one of world’s five best producers of Chardonnay”.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées "Clos de la Truffière", Niellon 2009
The old vines in the Clos de la Truffière have produced the most complete premier cru in the Niellon cellars in 2009, which of course is not surprising. The nose is deep, pure and beautifully complex, as it jumps from the glass in a blend of apples, oranges, very complex soil tones, spring flowers, a touch of youthful Niellon herbaceousness, citrus peel and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very long, with lovely focus and balance, a nice core of pure fruit, sound acids and fine focus on the long, soil-driven and complex finish. Fine juice. 2014-2030+. 92+.

Burghound: "Very mild reduction does not really detract from the otherwise fresh, pretty and complex spiced pear and wonderfully broad range of white floral aromas. It's immediately clear from the big-bodied flavors that there is another dimension present here relative to the 1ers as there is fine power, concentration and outstanding depth on the hugely long finish. This is a seriously impressive Bâtard and while it should easily improve for up to a decade, there is so much extract that with 30 minutes of air, it could actually be enjoyed young. Don't miss!"

Burghound: "Here mild reduction doesn't materially diminish the appeal of the more elegant if ever-so-slightly less complex aromas that feature notes of stone, lemon zest, acacia blossom and spiced pear. There is superb intensity and simply gorgeous detail to the mineral-driven and impeccably well-balanced flavors and explosive finale. Still, as good as this is and it is indeed exceptional, the superior complexity of the Bâtard gives it the barest of edges in 2009. Don't miss!"
